Hinamatsuri (Hina Doll Festival, Girl's Day)

Hinamatsuri is a traditional event in Japan. We pray girls healty growing. So we do hinamaturi every year in March 3. This event has been since Heian period(AD794~1185).

I don't have girl , but my wife likes Japanese traditional events. So, We set up Hinaningyou(Hina Dolls) and eat Chirashi sushi and drink amazake(traditional sweet, low-alcoholic Japanese drink).

This picture is our Hinaningyou(Hina Dolls). They are Emperor and Empress in Heian period. They wear Heian Period's Kimono.

We didn't buy Hina Dolls. Last year, My wife brought only two Dolls from her parent's house. This Dolls was bought for praying her healty growing about 30~40 years ago.

She loves these Dolls very much.

Those are really pretty! I learned about these dolls from an anime. The anime mentioned that Hina Dolls were made for a wealthy family who had a sick daughter. They didn't really know how to cure her sickness, so they made many dolls for her.

I'm not really sure if what the anime mentioned was true. Heh.

Good luck with your English test! :)

Hi ivy.Thanks for your comment.

I think many children unfortunately died in old japan. So these Dolls were made. We do "Tango no Sekku" for boys at May 5th every year, too.
By the way, Do you remember the anime title?

Yes, the anime/manga title is Mokke (もっけ) . It's about the lives of two sisters who have the sixth sense to see or be possessed by ayakashi but it's quite educational for learning about Japanese folklore but otherwise a little childish. :)

I didn't know Mokke. So I checked in internet. It is latest anime, isn't it. I feel you know more Japanese anime than I. I know old Japanese anime and comics.

Is it difficult to study Japanese? It is so hard to study English for me. I feel two lunguages are very different.

I haven't actually learned any formal Japanese. I taught myself how to read hiragana last summer and will teach myself how to read katakana this summer. I watch a lot anime to learn about Japanese culture and to learn new words, as well as to get used to the speed they speak. (Japanese people speak so quickly!!)

When I was young I made a childish promise to my father that I can one day speak 10 languages and at least 3 three equally fluently. Haha I don't think he remembers such a silly promise. But I can speak 9 now and I'm 'scouting' for the 10th language; I decided that it will be Japanese. This is why I watch so many animes (including the new ones) so that I can get to know the culture and language.

I am currently focusing on strengthening my Mandarin because I am already very close to achieving bilingual status. When this summer starts, I will find a teacher or school to learn Japanese formally.

I think Japanese will be quite difficult for me because its grammatical structure is very similar to Korean (one of the 9 languages I speak) where the verb comes after the object. In English it's always "I eat apple" but in Japanese/Korean it's "I apple eat". This is too difficult for an anglophone to get used to. In addition, the honorific system of -shita/-desu/-masu (which is also exists in Korean) will be difficult for me because it doesn't exist in English. Another challenging part might be the alphabets because they are very hard to write. Fortunately, I should have no problem with Kanji because I can write Chinese. Although, remembering how the Kanji sounds will be a problem since one character can have multiple pronunciations.

So, I think Japanese might turn out be the hardest language to learn for me! T___T

As for you, I can understand that English is very difficult because the grammatical rules are very different. But with a little bit of practice (like blogging) and by reading and watching English stuff, I'm very sure you will learn quickly! Your English is already really good! I have not spotted a grammatical error so far!

Ganbatte! ^___^

(If you like sci-fi anime, I suggest 電脳コイル written by 磯 光雄, who was involved in the production of Gundam and Neon Genesis. It's one of the best animes I've watched so far. If the DVD ever comes out here in North America, I'd buy it!)

You can speak 9 lunguages! it is great!

Many Japanese can speak only one lunguage. Most Japanese don't need to use foreign lunguage. All Japanese have learned English since junior high school. But it is little people can speak English.

As you pointed, Japanese has different grammatical structure. We were teached to read English backward by school teacher of English. If you read so, English structure is same on Japanese.

But if I continue reading English sentence backward, I can't speak English forever. Recentry, I can understand to read English from the beginning of the sentence.

It is very long road to learn foreign lunguage. But I would like to continue studying.

By the way, I feel English people speak so quickly!!!
I feel wards are changing, conecting and vanishing. It is so hard to hear English.

Hahaha! That is very true! You might want to get used to British English first, they pronounce things a lot more clearly than Americans. American s tend to join words together "wanna" instead of "want to", "gonna" instead of "going to". Since my accent is mostly American, I'm guilty of doing that too!

I read Korean backwards too. So I'm guessing I will do the same when I learn Japanese. It makes it very hard to speak because I have to invert my sentences in my head because I can say it. T____T

I don't know British English is more clear. We usually study American English.

I will take the TOEIC(English test) next Sunday. TOEIC has a listening test. Two years ago, It changed to have four countries pronunciation(British,American,Austrarian,Canadian). But I can't hardly tell the difference!

Ivy said...

Really??? They change accents for TOEIC? That's very difficult! Even I don't understand the Australian accent. It's too foreign to me. o.O

Ganbatte! I hope you do well!

My explanation isn't good. For example, two men have a talk. One is american ,The other is Australian.

Next question, one is American, The other is British.

I have to hear their conversation.
